Single for the Holidays? How to Make It Cozy, Merry, and Totally Yours

Here’s the truth: the holidays are marketed as a couples’ season, but you don’t need a plus-one to have a magical one. Whether you’re single by choice, single by chance, or just flying solo this year, you get to build the season exactly how you like it. No compromising on the tree. No arguing over the movie. Here’s how I do it.

1. Decorate for yourself first. Put the tree up, even if it’s a small one.. the bigger the better! A tabletop tree with warm lights and a few ornaments is plenty. Decorate because it makes you happy, not because anyone is coming over.

2. Create a cozy corner. Pick one spot, add a chunky knit blanket, a soft pillow, a candle, and a good lamp. That’s your holiday headquarters.

3. Plan your own traditions. Make them small and repeatable:

  • A hot cocoa bar with fun mugs and toppings
  • A Christmas movie marathon night, with snacks
  • Baking one new cookie recipe each weekend
  • A Sunday morning coffee by the tree

4. Treat yourself to a gift. Wrap it, put it under the tree, and open it Christmas morning. Ideas: a soft robe, a nice candle set, a good book,, a spa set, or a pretty ornament you pick just for this year.

5. Make something with your hands. Crafting is a great mood lifter, a simple wreath, or a pack of mini notebooks to journal your holiday memories.

6. Host a “Friendsmas.” Invite friends, neighbors, or coworkers over for a casual cookie swap or soup night. Everyone brings one dish, and you don’t need a big house.

7. Spread cheer to someone else. Drop off cookies to a neighbor, write a few Christmas cards, or send a small gift to a friend who lives far away. Giving is one of the quickest ways to feel merry.

8. Build a gratitude moment. Each night in December, write one good thing on a slip of paper and drop it in a jar. Read them on New Year’s Eve.

9. Get outside. Take a drive to see the lights, walk through a holiday market, or bundle up for a walk with a thermos of cocoa.

10. Be gentle with yourself. If a day feels heavy, that’s okay. Call a friend, take a long bath, and keep the lights on. It all counts.
